Wallsend church expresses opposition to same-sex marriage

14 Feb, 2012 05:52 AM
AT the same time bills to legalise same-sex marriage were introduced in Federal Parliament yesterday a church in Wallsend was expressing its opposition.

Wallsend Presbyterian Church on Nelson Street updated its message board last week and session clerk Doug Smiley confirmed it was in response to the proposed legislation.

The message displayed read, ‘‘Even tradies know you need both male and female joints to make a marriage’’.

Mr Smiley was unashamed in expressing his position on same-sex marriage.

‘‘It’s against religious principles, the world runs around creation and the world was created by God,’’ he said.

‘‘God created man and woman to procreate children.’’

Mr Smiley said the message would stay as it was.

As a Christian, I find Mr SMiley's comments smug and offensive. Gay people, arguably, have no choice in their sexual orientation. Unless Mr SMiley wishes to state same sex orientation a sin (a position denied by virtually all mainline churches), the validity of life-long same-sex unions does not fall foul of any test I can place.

Senator Penny Wong is a Christian I look to for guideance on this issue.

There are many homosexual plumbers, electricians, roofers, carpenters, brickies, industrial welders, mechanics, concreters, scaffolders, etc in the Newcastle Hunter and the broader civilian population. What an offensive thing to suggest by the church; and how insensitive also to closetted tradies who are either too afraid or uncomfortable to identify truthfully about their sexuality. Clearly, this church think gay men & women are all prissy hairdressers or macho dykes on bikes. Wake up to yourself. It's 2012. How embarrassing.

This is not the first time for this church. They think they are offending everyone, but for the majority of us it just gives us something to laugh at :)

"Even tradies know ..."? So they're having a crack at tradies too? Yeah, forgiveness and tolerance are the cornerstones of Christianity, sure. Tell that to the people burning in the fiery pits of hell for all eternity. Science is doing a perfectly good job of explaining natural phenomena, let's get rid of the anachronism that is religion. It's 2012, not 1812.

Keep your religious views out of my life. If god created me, he should accept that he made me gay!
