Broke Fordwich winegrower Andrew Margan was recognised for his outstanding contribution to tourism, winning the top gong at the Hunter and Central Coast Awards for Excellence in Tourism at Newcastle City Hall last night.
Mr Margan won the Outstanding Contribution to Regional Tourism by an Individual award and Minister for the Hunter Jodi McKay said Mr Margan would be a strong contender to win the state award.
Newcastle Airport marketing and communications co-ordinator, Rebecca Wilson won the Young Achiever award and also qualified for the state awards as a category winner.
"Andrew has been really driving wine within the tourism industry and not only in our region but at a state and national level," Tourism Hunter executive manager Sheridan Ferrier said.
"Rebecca has a very strong, solid background in the industry but she also does a lot of charity and community work outside of her role at the airport."
Mr Margan and his wife, Lisa established Margan Family Winegrowers in 1997, which has grown to sell 35,000 cases a year in Australia and 16 other countries.
Ms Wilson was recognised for her efforts in campaigning to boost domestic tourism visitation to Newcastle and the Hunter region.
Newcastle Airport and Tocal Homestead were inducted into the hall of fame after winning their respective awards for the third consecutive year.
Tocal Homestead won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism award and Newcastle Airport took the Specialised Tourism Services title.
Mary Rayner, of the Australian Reptile Park at Ourimbah, won the award for Outstanding Contribution to Regional Tourism.
