THEY might keep birds off crops, but Wollombi is hoping they do not scare away tourists.
Scarecrows will start lining Wollombi streets from tomorrow as the Wollombi Valley Scarecrow Festival kicks off.
In its fourth year, the event was a bit of fun for the community that was becoming a tourist attraction, organiser Melanie Morschel said.
"Last year we decided to make it a little bit bigger," she said.
Originally limited to the main roads of the village, privately owned land in central locations has been loaned to give the scarecrows pride of place.
Mrs Morschel said this year's I'd Rather Be theme aimed at getting people thinking about what they wanted to be when they grew up, while new awards would recognise creative placements and cheeky choices.
"One year we had a policeman with his speed gun," Mrs Morschel said. "That one caught a few people out."
Visitors can vote for their favourite scarecrow with a gold coin donation in village stores with proceeds going to the Hunter Mobile Preschool.
The festival runs until April 17.
