Work on Hunter Valley rail lines on track

21 Jul, 2009 04:00 AM
CONSTRUCTION of an essential rail upgrade to improve the capacity of the Hunter Valley coal rail network to Newcastle is steaming ahead.

The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) is building the $134 million first stage of the Minimbah Bank rail line, which includes construction of about 10 kilometres of rail track from Minimbah, west of Belford to Whittingham.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd started construction work on May 14 by turning the first sod.

ARTC chief executive David Marchant said the construction of stage one was expected to be complete by early next year.

"This is a vitally important project as part of the Federal Government's national building package to meet the forecasted increase in demand for export and domestic coal in the Hunter Valley," he said.

"Without the upgrade the main northern rail network, coal exported from the Hunter Valley through to the Port of Newcastle could start to be constrained from 2015."

ARTC recently formed the Hunter 8 Alliance with John Holland and GHD to design and build the new track, which will be built in two concurrent stages.

The alliance is making an environmental assessment and doing preliminary design work for stage 2, a third track of 32 kilometres from Maitland to Minimbah.

Mr Marchant said the project would bring benefits to the community with an estimated 650 full time jobs created during construction and opportunities for local and regional goods and service providers.

The alliance has prepared environmental and community management plans to alleviate the effect of the construction work on the community and the environment.

There can be no doubt that the government of the day had great vision when the first line was constructed.

Who is responsible for this outrageous waste of money? Rail lines are antiquated eyesores and must be closed.

Train travel has alot going for it. Look at the roads of today how many are killed due to speed and other things. When on a train you can look around relax, Even have a sleep. Try and do that in a car. One problem is on the local travel is with luggage if you are going to the airport with a family you have to put it somewhere and that takes up room where others can sit. I went to sydney at weekend and the train was full coming home on that sunday night. It got into Newcastle about 6pm. yes had its areas where more got off and left it low in people but there was still a few there. Did anyone know its family funday on Sundays .....Well it was that sunday. go to Sydney for $2.50 what a cheap way to get to Sydney and have a day out.

Jenny - how else can the coal get to the ship?.....

Jenny, you are an idiot if you think all that coal can reach the ports without rail. whats the other option? trucks? Have you seen how long those trains are? The number of trucks it would take would be horrendous. However, the fact that Krudd is both taking action to destroy the coal industry yet at the same time upgrading these rail lines just goes to show that he is completely incompetent and without any clearly defined direction to his policy.

Trains are antiquated, polluting eyesores. All rail lines must be closed. Starting with Newcastle then get rid of the rest.

Okay why are they eyesores. Why are they polluting. They are Electric.... What about the Power poles are they the same. All we get from them are Power. At least the trains get us places.
