Work starts on former Newcastle post office

31 Jul, 2010 04:00 AM
WORK has begun on the former Newcastle Post Office, revealing problems with electricity supply.

Minister for the Hunter Jodi McKay said the Land and Property Management Authority staff inspected the site yesterday.

"They are working with EnergyAustralia to get the supply of electricity disconnected to ensure the interior of the building is safe," she said.

"They are also implementing additional security measures and I urge people to remain outside the security fencing and not attempt to enter the building for their own safety. "

Ms McKay said the inspections revealed a number of problems with the building's condition, many of which were common to heritage buildings.

" . . . . the roof appears to be leaking and the basement area is flooded with contaminated water," she said.

A team of engineers, planners, heritage and environmental consultants and tradesmen have been assigned to work together to solve problems as they were uncovered.

An expression of interest process is due to begin in August providing the private sector with an opportunity to be involved in redeveloping the building.

This appears to have been a totally unhealthy site for many years. Why was this allowed to be so? It must have affected nearby sites, all along, with vermon etc. If Joe Blogs had owned it - this would not have been allowed. There are so many derelict sites in the city - it is quite unsavoury.

That's great Jodi. Getting the grand old Post Office underway fast and occupied as soon as possible is the way forward for not only the building but also the City Centre. It would make a great Tourism Headquaters and provides an option to relocate Tourism NSW from Sydney to Newcastle. They could make the move by train to Newcastle Station! That would earn you a smiley face!!

The old Latex house was full of water in that basement.Squatters lived in there.Water leaked from the taps within the building. Many people reported this to Hunter water but as far as they were concerned as long as the bills were being paid they didnt care. I found that a little off as it was when water was short to many places. When this building is fixed it should make a good office for Govt bodies at least if you needed to speak to them they were all in one bunch. Maybe cut down on some of the pass ons plus the poor people that go to the wrong one like its a STATE matter...no Its FEDERAL matter.Maybe even they could have an agent for Water Gas Power Council as all could be done in one trip on the train for some people.

For heavens sake !!! How long does it take to get the electricty supply disconnected...I am amazed that given the neglect and vandalism this has not been done years ago

Oh what a surprise there is a problem with the electricity supply! I bet the internal wiring is stuffed as well! Next story....leaking taps, gas leaks, disused telecomunications cables, unpaid rates, rising damp, crumbling foundations oh and not forgetting the leaking roof and the soon to be homeless pigeons.

" If Joe Blogs had owned it - this would not have been allowed" it was until a couple of months ago and it was and that's what started the whole state government buying it.
