Greens quiet on council aspirations

07 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
PROMINENT fig campaigners John Sutton and Fee Mozeley would neither confirm nor deny yesterday persistent rumours they had been preselected by the Greens for upcoming Newcastle City Council elections.

The party has not publicly announced its candidates despite holding preselections more than four weeks ago.

‘‘At this stage we’re not making any announcements,’’ Newcastle Greens convener Claire Charles said yesterday.

The Newcastle Herald has confirmed through a source that Mr Sutton, a former councillor, will run for lord mayor and will also head the Greens ticket in Ward 4.

Ms Mozeley is understood to be the party’s lead candidate in Ward 3.

Councillor Michael Osborne will recontest Ward 1, which includes areas such as Cooks Hill and Islington where Greens traditionally receive strong support from voters.

Mr Sutton said the party was ‘‘in a process at the moment [and] we’re going to make an announcement at some time in the future’’.

‘‘I’m neither confirming or denying that [I’m a candidate],’’ he said.

Ms Mozeley would also not confirm her candidacy, and said the party would decide when candidates were announced.

The ALP is expected to hold preselections for its Newcastle City Council ticket in April.

Labor councillor Nuatali Nelmes, who is considering nominating for lord mayor, said she did not understand why the Greens would not release information about their candidates.

‘‘I don’t know why it’s a secret,’’ she said.

Mr Sutton has been prominent in the campaign to save the Laman Street fig trees and is the public officer for Save Our Figs.

Ms Mozeley has the public face for much of the fig campaign and is one of the group’s public spokeswomen.

Work to remove the canopies of the Laman Street fig trees is expected to be complete by tomorrow afternoon.

If the key qualification for a candidate is that they led an unsuccessful community campaign opposing the removal of a handful of non-indigenous street trees, then I'm voting for someone else. This city has much bigger issues.

No thanks.

That's all we need - a green Council. They'll ban cars & make us all walk or ride bikes to work, stop all the coal trains from entering Newcastle and ban the coal ships. Yep, I can see it now.

What experience does councilor Nelmes from previous employment have to qualify her to run for our top job in the city? Where do we find such information?

I believe the current problem with Newcastle Council is a lack of proper governance, stemming from decades of neglect at facing the reality of "living within one's means".

NCC spends more than $50 million per year on doing things it should not be doing and the Greens and Labor Left have consistently ignored the need to reign in the waste.

The figs fiasco was just a sideshow to most ratepayers. However, while it was going on the Council hiked rates based on shaky numbers that evaded councillors too busy infighting and preoccupied with trivia.

Maladministration at its worst. Time to go.

So there you have it. Was the SOF campaign a ruse to gain exposure for two attention seekers and to smear the reputations of those already in Council? These two are in for a rude shock when they are smashed in the polls.

This story appears to explain a lot.

Fee Mozeley has been parading in the pages of the Herald as a defender of the heart of Cooks Hill.

So, naturally, she thinks she should be elected to represent an area that has nothing to do with Cooks Hill.

In my opinion she and her gang are no more than opportunistic politicos. All the tree fuss seems to have been nothing but a campaign for a self-serving cabal to entertain themselves at the expense of ratepayers and residents.

If these people get voted into council I believe they will completely stuff up Newcastle.

Ha ha ha...

How handy for John and Fee that the Fig saga dragged on for such a long time, keeping their names in the forefront.

John Sutton as Lord Mayor?

We may as well pack up and leave Newcastle.
