Hunter braces for more rain and possible flash floods

02 Feb, 2012 06:14 AM
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning stating that rain, which may lead to flash flooding, is forecast for the Hunter.

T he bureau advises that a slow-moving high pressure system near New Zealand has extended a ridge to the west across the Tasman Sea.

This is directing moist wind into a broad low pressure trough over northeastern NSW.

Consequently, rain which may lead to flash flooding is forecast for much of the state, including the Hunter.

Since 9am yesterday Narrabri has received 121 mm of rain, Bowra Sugarloaf 108 mm, Tamworth 104 mm and Nowendoc 102 mm.

A number of roads across the state have been closed due to flooding.

These roads include the Gwydir Highway, at several locations, the Oxley Highway between Gunnedah and Tamworth, Waterfall Way just past Bellingen and various roads in the Narrabri Shire Council area.
