Wild weather lashes coast

13 Feb, 2012 02:55 PM
Severe thunderstorms are expected to hit areas of the Hunter and the mid north coast tonight.

Large hailstones, flash flooding and damaging winds were predicted overnight.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued by the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) for the Northern Rivers, parts of the mid north coast, the Hunter and Northern Tablelands.

Severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Mannering Park, Nords Wharf and Catherine Hill Bay at 9.55 pm.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

* Move your car under cover or away from trees.

* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.

* Keep clear of fallen power lines.

* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.

* Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.

* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.

* Unplug computers and appliances.

* Avoid using the phone during the storm.

* Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.

* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.

Hi there. Difficult to predict. We know it's due at Dural about now (3.55pm). According to the BOM website there are four serious-looking cells heading north-east.

Newcastle radar shows Fern Bay/Williamtown area is getting a drenching, but the truth of the matter is there is blue sky and bright sunshine. One would think with today's technology it would have greater accuracy.

There has been so many warnings lately that have turned out to be nothing, eventually it will be like the boy who cried wolf.

Well the storm was pretty wild here in Medowie. My front yard and garage flooded. It almost looked like a cyclone.

So much rather get a warning and have nothing happen then get no warning at all like the poor buggers in qld last year who lost everything including lives. It seems there's no pleasing the poeple of newcastle they will whinge about anything from fig trees to storm warnings. It's about time you all put it into perspective and realised there's bigger things to worry about!
