REIGNING half-marathon champion Kristen Molloy will return to the Lake Macquarie Running Festival tomorrow after a fine 12 months of racing.
The 31-year-old Newcastle triathlete is one of 1900 people registered for the 26th year of the festival which involves a series of races between Warners Bay and Speers Point.
Event officer Kate Griffiths said she expected that figure to increase to a record-breaking 3000 runners by Sunday.
Molloy will start again as the hot favourite in the women's 21.5-kilometre main event.
So far this year she has won the Brisbane women's marathon and has been crowned the NSW ultra distance champion.
The half-marathon begins at 8am, followed by the 10km run at 8.10am and the children's scamper at 8.25am.
The field in this year's festival ranges from six to 83 years. Runners may register today at the Warners Bay esplanade from 1pm to 5pm or tomorrow before 8am.
