SIGNING autographs is a new experience for Merewether's Liam Speers but one he will need to get used to.
The 18-year-old discus and javelin thrower attracted a scrum of young fans wanting his signature on Saturday night at Glendale's Hunter Track Classic after he won the men's discus.
The former under-18 world No.2 thrower marked his debut event using a 1.75-kilogram discus on Saturday by beating Parramatta's William Sacilotto in the final by seven metres, with a throw of 50.13 metres.
"I was looking to qualify for the world juniors and that is 54 [metres] and this is the first comp I've thrown over 50 with the 1.75kg, so I'm happy with that," Speers said.
Speers, who turned 18 on January 29, has decided to defer the first year of his engineering and computer science degree at Sydney University to concentrate on remodelling his body.
"I want to train my physique to be that of a thrower and spend the year training and putting on same weight," he said.
World junior titles will be held in June at Moncton, in Canada.
Speers struggled in the javelin, finishing fifth, 17 metres behind the winning throw of 70.84m by Benjamin Baker.
Waratah high jumper Mark Taylor fell well short of posting a Commonwealth Games qualification mark when he failed to pass 2.06 metres.
Taylor finished second behind Brandy Hill's Nick Moroney, who managed 2.10m.
At the Brisbane Athletics Classic on Saturday night, ACT's Melissa Breen avenged her shock loss to Maitland speedster Laura Whaler the previous weekend at the Australia Cup.
Breen (23.74) also won the 200m from Whaler (23.93).
Maitland's Pirrenee Steinert finished third in the women's 400m and Elermore Vale sprinter Liam Gander was fourth in the men's 100m.
