Basketball stars reach new heights

12 Dec, 2009 04:00 AM
LAMBTON High School's success on the basketball court shows no signs of ending, with three year 7 students a part of their championship-winning team yesterday.

The school's senior girls' side defeated Redlands 59-39 to capture the Australian School Basketball Championships division-two title at Newcastle Basketball Stadium.

Sophie Parente (76 points for the tournament), Meiling Patfield (53) and Laura Dick (41) were the youngest members of the team but among their sharpest shooters.

But year 10 student Hannah Young was the star, scoring 113 points in six matches, including 19 in the final.

Young, who is leaving the school to study at St Francis Xavier's College, Hamilton, next year, won high praise after her final match for Lambton High.

"Hannah Young is the most talented young girl to come out of Newcastle that I've ever seen and I've been in that stadium since I was 12 years old," Lambton High coach Steve Dick said.

St Francis Xavier's College showed plenty of nerve in extra time to beat Ballarat High School 67-59 in the senior boys division-four final. There was heartbreak for All Saints College, Maitland, as they lost their junior boys division-three final to Chisholm Catholic College 44-43.
