McGovern stars as Hunters hit straps

06 Jul, 2009 05:00 AM
A TRIPLE double by former Pirates NBL guard Mat McGovern inspired the Newcastle Hunters to a 110-94 victory over Sutherland in the Waratah Australian Basketball League game at Broadmeadow on Saturday night.

McGovern led all scorers with 34 points, including five of 12 three-pointers, and added 13 rebounds and 10 assists as the Hunters humbled the three-time defending WABL champions for the second time this year.

Newcastle had lost 10 straight games since upsetting the Sharks 82-69 at Sutherland in their only other triumph this season.

The scores were locked at 76-76 after three quarters but, in the presence of many of their former players among the crowd of about 500, the Hunters ensured their annual reunion night was one to celebrate by outscoring the Sharks 34-18 down the stretch.

Mat Cook (24 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists) was not far behind former Pirates teammate McGovern, and rookies Matthew Mujic (15 points), Adoc Makwai (14 points in his WABL debut) and Akolde Mayom (13 rebounds, six points) gave great support.

The Hunters women improved their win-loss record to 7-7 and remained in the hunt for the WABL finals with a comfortable 75-53 victory over the Sharks (2-11).

Led by Dimity Stewart (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Katie Ebzery (16 points, seven assists, six rebounds, four steals), Newcastle were always in control.

The Hunters kept their State League women's finals hopes alive with a 59-57 victory over Dubbo, the Youth League women stopped Sutherland 66-49.

w.o.w-what absolute dribble!basketball is an awesome and skillful sport -a game which can played and supported by all walks of life. And it was good to see decent support from the community which other than the knights has no other newcastle team to cheer on.

What's intesrest?

Wayne of Windale you should appreciate basketball with its ghetto culture. Is 'intesrest' similar lingo to 'fasizzle.' Stick to the rugby league pages where at least you can stick to words with one sylable and sports with one dimension.

I agree with chargin' shoulder. Australia does have an interest in basketball, it's just unfortunate that there is no money in the game here. I would much rather follow a sport like basketball, than follow a sport where the players get paid way too much to defecate in hotels and glass their girlfriends!

green hornet- once again appropriate imput from the 'slime'.. b'balls ghetto culture (thankfully like gangster rap) in this country is on the decline as we (society/youth) don't seem to be influenced by american culture, values and standards as much as we used to be. no tattoos (apart from the "bogan" sthn cross on one hunters player) no chest thumping-no trash talk-no headbands-and unfortunately no cheeerleaders. great night out for the family (are we reading real nrl) to cheer on "local" players representing our region! saw josh morgan in the crowd and he seemed to have itchy feet-they need him!hopefully, next year he can slime off the studs for hi-tops!
