Ben Woolmer sets sights on Newcastle recall

22/11/2008 4:00:00 AM
REJECTED leg spinner Ben Woolmer hopes for a recall to Newcastle's NSW Country Championship squad at a selection meeting tomorrow night.

Woolmer was named in the squad for tomorrow's Ewin-Tennant trophy match against Illawarra but subsequently ruled ineligible because he had not played club cricket for Merewether this season.

Long-time Newcastle captain Simon Moore quit this week over the selection backflip.

Woolmer, a former NSW Second XI bowler, has not played for 18 months due to his wife having triplets but said last night he would make his debut for Merewether today against Cardiff-Boolaroo.

"I'm definitely lining up for Merewether in the morning and looking forward to getting back on the park," Woolmer said.

Newcastle District Cricket Association chairman of selectors Denis Broad said yesterday that if Woolmer played for Merewether today he would be considered at tomorrow's night's selection meeting.

Woolmer's reinstatement would open the door for Moore to return for the Country Championship in Gosford next weekend. Moore stepped down as captain, player and selector after Woolmer, who has trained with the rep squad for several weeks, was dumped from the team without his knowledge.

Moore said he would make himself available if Woolmer was reinstated tomorrow night.

Woolmer was deemed ineligible by a ruling passed at a NDCA management committee meeting on October 20.

Moore said some of the selectors, including himself, were unaware of the directive.

"The main sticking point for not selecting him [Woolmer] was a rule four of five selectors were not aware of," Moore said.

A motion passed unanimously at the meeting stated "players not playing in the grade competition shall not be selected in NDCA teams or allowed to attend representative training".

NDCA chairman Paul Marjoribanks said if Newcastle picked Woolmer tomorrow "it would not be in the spirit that the rule was brought in".

"We've had some instances in previous seasons where players have just played to get into rep cricket and then not played again," he said.

But Marjoribanks admitted the wording of the ruling should be changed.

"It probably needs tightening up, and maybe the selectors need tighter guidelines," he said. "Selectors pick on form. To make those decisions they need to see the player playing, so I suggest he'd need to have played a number of matches."

Woolmer denied yesterday he was playing for Merewether today only to earn rep selection.

"I'll guarantee you, I'll play the whole season [for Merewether]," he said.

Newcastle coach Greg Geise said Woolmer should never have been ruled ineligible.

"The rules are put in place to protect if there is some shadiness going on. Ben Woolmer is one of the most respected players we've had play for Newcastle over the last 10 years," he said.

" . . . I'm hoping Ben is included in the side with Simon Moore and just get on with it."

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
