Cockley watching his stocks rise quickly

30 Oct, 2009 04:00 AM
BURT Cockley is starting to cash in as a cricket spectator.

The former Waratah-Mayfield fast bowler signed a basic two-year contract with the Blues last year.

But a stint as a spectator in the lucrative Indian Premier League and a short, non-playing holiday in India last week sent his bank balance racing at a similar pace to his bowling.

The kid from the back blocks of Waratah West is not sure how much of the $2.7 million prizemoney he will earn for his seven days in India watching NSW win the Champion League Twenty20. NSW players are understood to be pocketing $50,000 each from the prizemoney.

Cockley was a late call-up when injury threatened to rule quick Doug Bollinger out of the side for the semi-final against Victoria.

Bollinger appeared no chance of taking his place, but a last-minute decision to play relegated Cockley to the bench.

"I'm not sure how much I'll get, but one of the guys said it will probably be a pro rata," Cockley said. "I don't really know, to be honest, but I'll probably get a cut of what the rest of the boys are getting."

Cockley made his first-class debut for the Blues in February 2008 when he was not on a state contract. That was rectified in April last year when he signed a two-year deal worth about $60,000 a year.

He will almost double that this year after his a deal with the Kings XI Punjab for the IPL in South Africa, where he did not play a game, plus the money from last week's win.

"It was fantastic, a great experience," Cockley said of his time in India.

"I was very close to playing in the semi-final, but that wasn't to be.

"It's all very exciting after getting picked in the Australia A side last season.

"My focus now is on cementing a spot in the NSW four-day and one-day teams this summer and seeing how far I can go from there."

He made a first successful step towards that yesterday when he was named in the NSW 12-man squad for the one-dayer against Western Australia on Sunday at North Sydney Oval.

Former Newcastle teammate Michael Hogan is in the Warriors squad.

Cockley will also play in today's 10-over celebrity match at Blacktown Olympic Park to launch the 2009-10 season for the NSW Blues and women's NSW Breakers.

Players from the state teams will combine, and Newcastle will have a representative in both sides. Cockley is in the Lisa Sthalekar XI and Leah Poulton is in the Simon Katich XI.

Give him more cash! There are trained monkeys like me shuffling paper in offices all over the world for more than his wage. Burt has joined the elite in an international sport doing what he loves. He should be rewarded accordingly. I'm sure Burt would be bowling bumpers all day whether you paid him or not. Hope he goes all the way to Bollywood and beyond!
