Magic striker steers juniors into new era

07 May, 2008 06:00 AM
WHEN Broadmeadow striker Peter Haynes is not netting goals, he is helping to develop the state league goalscorers of the future in his new role with Northern NSW Football.

Haynes joined NNSWF in January as its community football officer after 18 months of primary school teaching at Edgeworth and Rutherford.

Meanwhile, he is giving state league goalkeepers nightmares with six goals in three games this season to again lead the competition.

One of Haynes's primary roles with NNSWF is developing the new small-sided soccer for under 6s through to under 12s.

Small-sided soccer is a modified version of the adult game and consists of playing on a smaller field with fewer players to give juniors more touches.

The program kicked off last weekend in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley and goes national in 2009.

"All the feedback from kids and parents has been really positive once they've seen how it works," Haynes said. "It's a tool to develop better players some of the best countries do it."

Haynes also regularly visits schools to conduct skills clinics and develop competitions.

It is a job he loves.

"I think everyone who plays the game would like to earn a living doing what they love," he said.

"Unfortunately it didn't work out for me on the park, but this is the next best thing."

On the pitch, Haynes is having an equally satisfying time.

Magic are flying high with three straight wins, and the Lambton Jaffas junior has played a big role in Broadmeadow's success since joining the club in 2005.

Haynes, though, said he received plenty of support.

"We've had a pretty good start to the season, but with our side at the moment you could have anyone up front and they'd score goals," he said. "So I've just been lucky to be in the right place at the right time."

Haynes credits a lot of his success to teammate John Bennis, who has played alongside him since he was 12, and fellow striker Joel Wood.

"He [Wood] may not have scored all the goals, but he's been red-hot for us and a very important member of our team," Haynes said.

The Magic and Haynes will face their biggest test this season when they tackle arch rivals Hamilton on Sunday at Wanderers Oval.
