A-League still calling for restless Waters

29 Apr, 2009 04:00 AM
BROADMEADOW midfielder Brad Waters will make an important telephone call on Friday.

On the other end will be North Queensland Fury coach Ian Ferguson, and hopefully for Waters he will be given details for a three-week trial with the new A-League franchise.

The 22-year-old met Ferguson two years ago while playing at NSW Premier League club Marconi.

Keen to push for a professional football career, Waters gave the Scotsman a call during the summer to see if he needed any more players at the Townsville-based club.

"I gave him a call myself just to see how the squad was going up there and he said, 'Do you want to come up,' " Waters said. "He said, 'If you turn up and train with everybody else and do well, there's no reason why I won't give you a contract.' "

Waters has had a long history of playing representative football in Newcastle junior sides and featured in the final year of Newcastle United in the National Soccer League.

Waters trained with Sydney FC in the first season of the A-League but any chance he had with the Sky Blues was cruelled when he tore lateral ligaments in his ankle.

Later he attended a Jets training session, but his fitness levels were low after returning from a torn hip.

Waters enjoyed a stellar Northern NSW State League season with Magic in 2008, culminating in a man-of-the-match performance in Broadmeadow's penalty shoot-out grand final win over Azzurri.

That form has continued in 2009, and he is confident injury will not stop him from taking his shot at the A-League this time.

"This is the first time in three years when I haven't had an injury," he said. "All the other times leading up to trials or training with A-League teams I either had an injury a few months before or got injured during it.

"Basically it's up to me to perform when I'm required to because I'm fit.

"I'm just trying to get things ready to be as fit as I can and to be as mentally ready as I can for when I go up."

Former Magic defender Beau Busch is already at the Fury, as is Newcastle-born Robbie Middleby.

However, the obvious drawcard besides professional football is Fury's marquee signing Liverpool great Robbie Fowler.

"His nickname at Liverpool was 'God' so that just shows the calibre of player he is," Waters said. "I'm a Man United fan and I met Dwight Yorke in the first year at Sydney FC during the A-League, but Robbie Fowler will be on the same line as him."
