Bennis leaves Broadmeadow behind for Scottish fling

17 Jun, 2009 05:00 AM
BROADMEADOW first-grade captain John Bennis checked in for what could be his last training session for Magic last night before he leaves to trial with Scottish clubs on Friday.

The midfielder will spend the next six weeks trialling with second-tier clubs Dundee and Greenock Morton and third-tier Dumbarton.

The 26-year-old's wife, Amanda, has a British passport, which has made it easier for him to get a visa.

If unsuccessful in Scotland, Bennis will return to Broadmeadow four weeks before the semi-finals.

[PI9017] Will Pryce's run of bad luck with injuries has taken a turn for the better, and the Valentine Phoenix defender is likely to return to light training tomorrow night.

Pryce suffered a grade-two medial ligament tear in his left knee against South Cardiff this month.

Pryce feared the injury would require a knee reconstruction, but the knee is responding well after a week of rest.

The former Azzurri captain tore the ACL and medial ligament in his right knee late last season and will have surgery to repair it at the end of this year.

"I've just had a gutful. I'd put so much emphasis on looking after my bad knee, and to injure my other knee, I was pretty devastated," Pryce said yesterday.

"I had physio this morning and it's improved out of sight."

[PI9017] The Hunter has dominated selections for the Northern NSW girls' under-15 and under-17 squads for the national youth championships.

Ten of the 16 girls in the under-15 squad are from the Hunter, which also supplied half of the Northern under-17 squad.

Northern NSW is hosting the National Youth Championships for Girls at BCU International Stadium in Coffs Harbour from July 11 to 18.

Cardiff City women's coach Jason Aird is in charge of the under-15s.

Kean Marshall is at the helm of the under-17s.
