Bluebells blossoming despite loss of top goal scorer

02 Jun, 2010 04:00 AM
WEST Wallsend proved they have the depth to absorb the loss of strike weapon John Majurovski with a 2-1 win over Phoenix on Sunday.

Majurovski broke his ankle against Weston last week and coach Chris Miner gave young striker Ty Jones a chance to take the 2009 leading goal scorer's place in the Bluebells starting line-up.

Jacob Bailey and Michael Sessions scored Westy's goals at Johnston Park.

Jones was doing well until a corked thigh sidelined him and John Stojanovski replaced him with 25 minutes to go.

"Stoj was the sharpest he's been for a long time, which is great news for the club," Miner said.

¦ Weston super sub Ethan Carusi made his first-grade debut at the weekend and scored a late goal in the 7-1 win over Toronto Awaba.

It was Carusi's third goal of the day after he scored twice off the bench in the under-23 team's 4-2 win over the Stags.

The Bears under 23s were two goals down when Carusi came on.

¦ Chris Berlin has joined Broadmeadow Magic's injured list.

The Hamilton Olympic import watched from the sidelines as his former club beat Magic 3-1 at Wanderers Oval on Sunday.

He picked up a rib injury in the previous week's match against Edgeworth.

Broadmeadow were also without captain John Bennis, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in pre-season, and Jon Griffiths, who is out for another two weeks with an ankle injury. Goalkeeper Scott Carter has just returned from a shoulder injury.

¦ Toronto Awaba and Olympic will play a rescheduled match on Thursday, June 10, at Darling Street Oval from 8.30pm.

¦ State league leaders Edgeworth will meet first division counterparts Lake Macquarie in a rescheduled Solo Cup match tonight at Jack McLaughlan Oval.

Cross-town rivals Magic and Olympic also play tonight at Jack McLaughlan Oval.

In other matches tonight, Toronto Awaba play New Lambton at Peacock Field, Weston meet Warners Bay and West Wallsend face Phoenix at Warners Bay Oval.

Just like what happened to him at Weston, his services were no longer required by the club. That is what I've been told.
