Bridges says Sydney set for soaking

02 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
MICHAEL Bridges has the utmost respect for Sydney FC, but the Jets veteran believes his old club may be ripe for the picking.

The Jets (22 points) have an opportunity to leapfrog the Sky Blues (24) into sixth place when they meet at Sydney Football Stadium on Sunday.

Bridges spent a year at Sydney FC during his first visit to Australia and is aware of the expectation of the glamour club and pressure associated with that.

Sydney have recorded one win in the past seven games after a strong start to the season.

‘‘This could be a good time to catch them,’’ Bridges said. ‘‘They have some great players but we know they are vulnerable. The league table doesn’t lie.

‘‘Hopefully we can go down there and catch them off their guard. You don’t need any more incentive when you play Sydney.’’

The Jets are fresh from a confidence-boosting 1-0 win over Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium.

‘‘It was such a good feeling to beat Brisbane,’’ Bridges said.

‘‘Sydney do not keep the ball as well as Brisbane Roar do.

‘‘I’m not sure what game plan [coach] Gary [van Egmond] has in mind, but I’d be surprised if we don’t have a real go at them.’’

Bridges has played nine games, including the past six, since coming out of retirement.

The former Leeds United star has been used mainly as a substitute and has provided a spark when chasing the game, or as he did against Brisbane, help protect a lead.

‘‘They are both roles I enjoy,’’ he said.

Rain yesterday forced the Jets off the training pitch and into in an old-fashioned conditioning session without a ball in sight.

The wet conditions were in stark contrast to the heat and humidity on Tuesday.

‘‘Yesterday was hot as hell,’’ Bridges said yesterday.

‘‘I went home afterwards and sat in front of the air-conditioner all afternoon.

‘‘Today it is like being back in England.

‘‘It is hard when the pitch is waterlogged. There is only so much you can do. It was the fitness coach’s dream.

‘‘It was a tough session, but it was good.’’

The sign says KEEP OFF.

Maybe the grounds are closed....... Local clubs are asked to respect closure signs and prevent damage to the playing surface. Jets when you have your own and only the Jets use the ground, then do what you want......till then remember their are other users of the sporting fields in the winter season, they expect a good surface to play on too.

@ himagain, Only read headlines and look at pictures, they have been saying the same old lines for years so you dont have to read much when they say they are going to do something. You should not say i hate something as you dont know me, and hate is a very strong word to use, but im not you.

@ Fed Up. They would not be silly enough to contemplate such a thing. Come to think of it, no other HAL club would be keen either on a coach with such a miserable win draw loss record. But hey its always been somebody else's fault. The man who wrote the book of excuses can't feature himself in it. Shame the same rules that applied to Payne do not extend to the head mini bus.
