FFA must lead way in Newcastle's time of need

02 Sep, 2010 05:00 AM
SO let's get this straight.

Football Federation Australia was happy to gamble an estimated $45 million (government-subsidised, admittedly) on a World Cup bid that may or may not pay dividends more than a decade down the track.

Likewise, Australia's governing body was quite content to spend $2 million per annum, plus bonuses, for the next four years on a Socceroos coach most people had never heard of.

Not forgetting that over the past five years it has regularly propped up or taken control of various A-League franchises who have fallen on tough times.

But how deep it is willing to dig to rescue the Newcastle Jets remains to be seen.

Since it emerged on Monday that Jets players have not been paid because club owner Con Constantine finds himself in a sticky financial situation, FFA officials have shed little light on their intentions and refused to answer media questions.

Their only public comments have been in the form of emailed statements, such as this one yesterday from A-League chief executive Lyall Gorman: "Communication is ongoing with Newcastle Jets FC to assist with the present issues the club is facing.

"FFA remains in the process of understanding the issues but we have every confidence the match will go ahead on Sunday. FFA has no further statement at this time."

Given FFA's circle-the-wagons reaction, the only available information is the version of events outlined by Jets management - that the club asked for help to deal with a cash-flow shortfall but found it less than forthcoming.

Constantine has insisted he does not want "a handout", just an advance on an FFA grant or a loan.

"I have never before asked the FFA for a cent," he said.

The FFA is entitled to do its due diligence.

It is perhaps concerned, given his track record, that Constantine is trying to shame FFA with brinkmanship and using his players as pawns.

It is possibly wary about applying a Band-Aid to what may prove to be a gaping wound, or throwing good money after bad.

And FFA may also be strapped for cash.

But the bottom line is this simple.

FFA needs the Newcastle Jets as much as Newcastle Jets need FFA.

The Jets are one of only three teams - along with heavyweights Sydney and Melbourne Victory - to have won an A-League championship.

They have made the finals in four of the A-League's previous five seasons.

In all but the 2008-09 campaign, when they finished last, they have been competitive against clubs who spent vastly more on their rosters.

That success has cost Constantine an estimated $15 million - an expensive hobby, even for a a self-made multimillionaire.

Wealthy he may be, but Constantine has reached breaking point.

There was always a chance this day would come, especially given his frustration over the unique ground-sharing arrangement at EnergyAustralia Stadium, by which the Newcastle Knights have a stranglehold on match-day income.

Now Con needs a hand.

Many will have little sympathy for him.

What comes around goes around, they will argue.

But unless FFA has some other cashed-up benefactor willing to write off $2 million a year, give or take, then Constantine remains its best option.

The only alternative is to allow the Jets to fold, as did KB United, Adamstown Rosebud and Newcastle Breakers before them.

That would not only be a tragedy for one of Australia's footballing strongholds, it would be a mortal blow to the A-League's credibility.

If the Jets disappear into extinction, then FFA should hang its head in shame.

what a load of old sentimental garbage all that was. like watching some american teenage sooky vampire film. It is not the fault of the FFA that Branco can only recruit Marconi players that we dont want to pay to see play. It is not the fault of the FFA that Con took the trophy home in his limo. It is not the fault of the FFA that newcastle people support the labor party. It is not the fault of the FFA that NTS can only kick long balls over the sideline with a five paces run up.

Yet another blame it on the Knights article. The only thing unique about the hire arrangement the Jets have with the Knights for EnergyAustralia Stadium is that they pay a fraction of the market rate on rent. Catering rights, naming rights and pourage don't go to event hirers - at any venue. In fact many major venues retain the corporate and signage rights too. Changing the stadium management rights won't change that. If Con really thinks he's getting ripped off let him go to another venue and see how he goes. Footballers aren't the only ones that have bills to pay.

Thanks FFA. Im pumped for this game. I will be there with family in tow. I have no time or respect for Con but I am behind the boys all the way. To the small and dwindling 'No Con No Jets crowd'. Wake up and get with reality, the Jets are a million times more likely to prosper without Con than with him. If you were a sponsor would you associate yourself with the team whilst Con is in charge? Each year with Con is like another nail in our coffin. Another season with Con on board and I say we are doomed, and we can't afford to take that risk.

Well said, Robert. My biggest gripe has always been what I see as the Knights getting the better deal on a ground which is owned by the state government and therefore the people of NSW not the Knights. I don't know the details of the agreement but it has always seemed to me that Con is missing out on finances he should be getting. What a shame he can't use a different venue for the Jets. Maybe No 2 sportsground?

Pam - your gripe with the Knights is unfounded. The Knights negotiated a lease with Hunter Venues. The Jets negotiated a lease with the Knights. The Jets agreed to the terms that they lease the stadium under. The lease is an asset that the Knights own - why shouldn't they be able to sub-let the stadium under terms different to the main lease? The Knights are doing nothing wrong here and it is either mis-information or ignorance that is painting the Knights as the baddies here.

Don, novocastrians like you make me sad...that's why newcastle is in such bad shape...you all take things for granted when someone else puts in the cash. Newcastle owned consortiums tried and failed with soccer or football (call it what you like) in the past at the national level. "The Jets are more likely to prosper without Con" you say, just like the Knights have prospered financially over the years - bloody laughable!!!

None of the jets problems are the Knights fault. Most, if not all, are Con's fault. Alienating most of your potential customers is not a recipe for a successful business. A change of attitude on Con's part is needed.

Don - the so called sponsors that you speak of - where were the sponsors before Con took over? Corporate Newcastle has never been there and will never be there.

AlexMc-Knights did not negotiate a lease with Hunter Venues, they were handed the licence without any tendering process by the State Government appointed ISC Trust. The Knights are only now happy to rescind that lease because of a favourable outcome for them at arbitration earlier this year. I have always believed that each sporting code should arrange their own terms for hire with a neutral body, now represented by Hunter Venues Authority. Both codes should be treated as tenants with their own negotiated leases with HVA - as it should be. Otherwise what is the role of HVA?
