CAPTAIN Michael Bridges insisted the pressure of playing for the club's future would bring the best out of the embattled Newcastle Jets.
The Jets take on an in-form Brisbane Roar at EnergyAustralia Stadium tomorrow in what could be the club's final appearance, certainly in its present form.
Player and staff wages were not paid yesterday for the second straight week and Football Federation Australia had to step in to cover the cost of hosting the match, to ensure it went ahead.
"We know we are playing for our future and the club's future and we have to prove our worth on Sunday," Bridges said last night.
"To be honest, the game can't come quick enough. You are able to switch off for three hours and do what you love."
The stress of the past week was clear at training on Thursday when Bridges and Sean Rooney exchanged heated words and Adam D'Apuzzo and Kasey Wehrman clashed.
"There were blow-ups last season and in the pre-season, it is just the timing of this one," Bridges said.
"It added spice to the fire.
"It shows the boys are committed and up for the challenge.
"That is what we need. We need fighters, we don't want people to throw the towel in."
The Roar have been the surprise packets of the opening month.
They travel to Newcastle undefeated and yet to concede a goal.
The Queenslanders have had a boost with the return of Brazilian striker Reinaldo at a venue where they have won five of eight games.
Despite the off-field distractions, Bridges said the Jets would be more than ready for the Roar.
"We know what to expect but nothing that scares us," he said.
"They are a young team, full of legs and full of energy.
"We have a bit more experience and hopefully it's a case of brains outweighing the enthusiasm of youth."
Jets coach Branko Culina will not complete his line-up until after training today.
Jobe Wheelhouse (knee) has been ruled out but Bridges was hopeful that Ruben Zadkovich (hamstring) and Nikolai Topor-Stanley (knee) would be right.
"We have wrapped Ruben and Nikolai in cotton wool, because they are such valuable players," Culina said.
"Both trained today and fingers crossed for Sunday."
Chinese import Zhang Shuo ran at the point of the attack at stages yesterday and is likely to make his debut.
"Nobody knows who is in and who is not yet," Bridges said.
"We have gone over the shape so everybody knows the job they will have if selected.
"Zhang is a hot prospect.
"Credit to him. He must have been thinking what the hell is going on but he has gone about his business like a professional."
