Haynes scores four on magic afternoon

Haynes scores four on magic afternoon

13 Apr, 2008 11:00 PM
BROADMEADOW and Hamilton Olympic staked premiership claims with impressive wins in the opening round of Northern NSW State League.

Magic striker Peter Haynes was sensational at Wanderers Oval yesterday, scoring four goals in his side's 5-1 win over South Cardiff.

Broadmeadow's ball movement through Simon Mooney and Joel Wood was too slick for the Gunners in the first half, and Haynes made South Cardiff pay with a hat-trick before the break.

His third goal was a chip over Gunners goalkeeper Kyle Macorig, and Magic coach Peter McGuinness described the touch as "world class".

"I was very happy with the result and the first half, but the second half was a little sub-par as we allowed Southy back into the game," McGuinness said.

"I just think collectively we dropped off in the second half, and that's something we need to work on."

Gunners coach Chris Miner conceded defensively his side were no match for the Magic attack.

"They [Magic] were just on fire. We took too long to get into the game, and by the time we did it was 3-0 and half-time," Miner said.

"Defensively across the park we did not get organised quick enough, and a couple of errors gifted them goals."

In the second half South Cardiff strung more passes together for Chad Humphries to score the sole Gunners goal.

In the dying stages Ibrahim Khodary and Haynes extended the lead to 5-1.

On Saturday night at Darling St Oval, Olympic beat Edgeworth 6-3 in a match held up for 40 minutes when Daniel Casciaroli suffered a broken leg.

The Olympic debutant appeared to mistime a tackle moments after coming off the bench with the score at 4-1.

Casciaroli was taken from the ground by ambulance and had a rod inserted into his leg yesterday.

The Eagles' Cameron Hughes was also taken to hospital, but he was cleared of a broken leg.

Azzurri led Weston Workers 1-0 at half-time before their game was abandoned due to lightning.

Lake Macquarie and Toronto drew 1-1, and Valentine Phoenix stormed home to beat West Wallsend 3-1. Bluebells pair Antony Surjan and Matt Beatty were red-carded in the second half.
