Jets captain Matt Thompson confirms move to Melbourne

24 Nov, 2009 05:23 PM
JETS captain Matthew Thompson confirmed today that he would be joining new A-league club Melbourne Heart on a three-year deal at the end of the season.

Thompson and Adelaide midfielder Christian Sarkies were announced as the Hearts first signings as coach John van't Schip looks to assemble a quality squad for their maiden campaign.

One of only four remaining foundation players, Thompson had wanted to stay in Newcastle but the Jets offer fell $50,000 short of the reported $200,000 a season he will receive in the Victorian capital.

"It is a disappointing to leave the club I have been at for the past five year, but this is a new challenge," Thompson said.

"It's a fresh start at a completely new club and I am excited about it.

"But that is not until next year. I have four

months to go at Newcastle and I am determined to do the best I can here."

ok he's not the first player to leave and won't be the last. seems like it's the captain's curse. maybe the club needs to look at why players want to leave the club and not many are knocking on their door. good luck in melb matt. thanks for 5 years service. you can leave with your head up. great ambassador for the game

Thanks for your hard graft and service Thommo! You were always one of the more likeable faces at the Jets, but I cannot blame you wanting to leave what I think is a badly run club with a team that has lost it's way.Good luck with the rest of your career.

Feel a bit sad about this, he was a decent player and good bloke. But $200,000 a year? Maybe there is some mistake in the paperwork and Heart think they have just purchased Archie Thmpson.

Im sorry but 450k for two run of the mill players in Thompson and Colossimo is a waste. The new teams should be pushed to bring in more overseas talent, not simply knit pick from the clubs already established.

"newy_tard_represent", re your comment. Your comment ridicules the jets more than it does melbourne, think about it!
