Jets' list of wounded swells after trip west

25 Aug, 2010 05:00 AM
ONE after another they climbed out of the Jets' club van.

Nikolai-Topor Stanley, Zhang Shuo, Sean Rooney, Ruben Zadkovich, Jobe Wheelhouse, Adam D'Apuzzo, Kaz Patafta - the Jets' rehabilitation group.

While the remainder of the squad sweated it out on Ray Watt Oval, the injured brigade watched from the sideline after returning from the nearby Forum gymnasium.

Topor-Stanley (hamstring), Zhang (calf), Patafta (hamstring) and Rooney (calf) missed the Jets's 1-0 loss to Perth on Saturday.

The others returned from the west with knocks.

Wheelhouse will have an MRI scan on his right knee today, Zadkovich is carrying hamstring and groin niggles and D'Apuzzo rolled his ankle.

D'Apuzzo is the only one likely to return to training today.

The Jets have the bye this weekend and coach Branko Culina is hopeful everyone, bar Rooney and Patafta, will be right for the crucial home clash against giant-killers Brisbane Roar in 10 days.

"Having the bye is probably not a bad thing for us due to the fact we have quite a few players who have pulled up a little lame and others who are still recovering from injury," Culina said.

"The week off will give us a little bit of extra time."

The Jets trained five days straight leading up to the Perth game but Culina dismissed suggestions that the heavy workload may have contributed to the injuries.

"It wasn't that we worked them that hard," he said.

"We had a heavier workload early in the week but really it is the travel.

"If you pick up a knock when you are travelling that distance it makes a difference as far as recovery is concerned."

Of the injured, most interest surrounds Zhang.

The Chinese international arrived in Australia last week after delays with a visa then suffered a small tear in his calf at training.

A misfiring Jets front third has scored one goal in three games but Culina said he would not risk Zhang until he was fit.

"He is no different to any other player, he needs to be ready," Culina said.

"He should be joining the team by the end of the week."

who is doing the strength and conditioning work at the jets? Muscle injuries at this early stage of the season are not a great sign - these are the type of thing that are prevented or minimised in most clubs these days. Hope that the week off sorts out the problems and then we can go from strength to strength.

so which is it branko? you worked hard or you didnt? and i quote "It wasn't that we worked them that hard," he said. "We had a heavier workload early in the week but really it is the travel. so are you saying every away trip we will lose players to injury? looking like our clubs decision not to replace the strength & conditioning coach is backfiring with almost $500k worth of players not even fit enough to play. This could be general custers ooops i mean genral culina's last stand... 9 games since our last win (outside of penalties) and counting

I haven't seen any comments published yet, but here's betting someone call's for Branko's head on the basis of the article, presumably because he made the team train for 5 days straight although no details are given about what the sessions involved. It's a worry Jobe needs an MRI on his knee, here's hoping it aint ligament damage.

oh no. 1 goal in 3 games and now even less chance. How are you supposed to win supporters when there's nothing to cheer about? For stuffs sake do something or anything to pinch some goals.

@wonded jets - when he says the travel did the most damage, im pretty sure he means this away game specifically, seeing as its on the other side of australia.
