 Leading pack beckons Jets

Leading pack beckons Jets

03 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
THE top six is tantalisingly within reach but Jets stalwart Tarek Elrich denies Sunday’s showdown with Sydney FC is a make-or-break juncture in his team’s season.

After banking a draw against Adelaide and a win in Brisbane last week, the Jets have clawed their way back to seventh rung on the A-League ladder with 22 points, two behind sixth-placed Sydney.

A win at Sydney Football Stadium could lift Newcastle into the top six for the first time since mid-December, though a loss could leave them five points adrift of the pace-setting pack with just seven games to play.

As with any tightrope walk, Elrich said the best approach was to take it one step at a time.

‘‘We’ve got to take every week as it comes, but we’re coming off a good win up in Brisbane and it helps build our confidence,’’ Elrich said.

‘‘We kept a clean sheet and defended our lead and shut them out for most of the game.

‘‘We can take all those positives into this game.

‘‘I’m not going to say it’s the end of our season if we drop points, because it’s one of those things [where] if we can string two or three wins together, like some of the other sides have done, it will get us back there in the mix.’’

Finals veteran Elrich said it was crucial for the Jets to remain focused on performance rather than the points table.

‘‘To be honest, we haven’t even mentioned that,’’ he said.

‘‘We just know we need to win as many games as we can. We haven’t been playing too badly, it’s just that some of the results haven’t fallen our way.

‘‘Most of the games we’ve had our chances, we just haven’t capitalised.

‘‘But we haven’t really touched on being two points out of the top six.’’

Newcastle will have to overcome a two-year hoodoo to take maximum points against Sydney. The Jets have not beaten the Sky Blues since November 29, 2009, and have lost four of their past five games against Sydney.

‘‘Sydney are a quality team, and if you let your guard down against them, they’ll make you pay,’’ Elrich said.

‘‘Last time we played them, we were leading 1-0 and dominating the game and they beat us 2-1.

‘‘A few mistakes cost us dearly. Obviously we’ll work on that this week

‘‘If there is a hoodoo, hopefully we can break it, but to be honest none of the boys are sitting around thinking, ‘We haven’t beaten Sydney in so long’ or whatever.’’

Last month, Elrich, a member of Newcastle’s 2008 premiership team, became the most-capped Jet when he beat former skipper Matt Thompson’s record of 121 games for the club.

He looks set to extend that tally after kicking off contract talks recently aimed at extending his tenure.

On Sunday, the 25-year-old will line up against two former Jets teammates in Mark Bridge and Nick Carle but insisted: ‘‘There’s no friends once you walk on the field.’’

Spot on "jets man"...generally it would be preferable to have wide players who can cross, but hey, I'm not the coach.

With a weeks rest and if they can do a repeat performance I think the boys will come home strong. Sydney have been suffering all season I think if they can keep the momentum going and play their own game this should be a walk in the park lets just hope the boys don't loose the mongrel through the week and especially now lavicka is leaving would be a good for the boys from Newcastle give em a good whooping at home GO U JETS

Love that 30% win ratio, embarressing for all involved that a team who has won 6 games can still be in contention! haha
