EDGEWORTH reclaimed their place at the top of the Northern NSW State League table yesterday, but second-placed West Wallsend suffered a huge blow with a possible season-ending injury to star striker John Majurovski.
The league’s leading scorer was carried off just before half-time with a suspected broken ankle after landing awkwardly in yesterday’s 1-1 draw at Weston.
Bluebells coach Chris Miner said the club had been ‘‘on a roll, an emotional high’’ before Majurovski’s injury.
‘‘We’re all devastated at the moment,’’ Miner told The Herald.
Majurovski was last year’s leading scorer and player of the year.
Edgeworth found their finishing touch with a 4-1 win over struggling Broadmeadow Magic yesterday at Jack McLaughlan Oval.
The Eagles dominated a Magic side lacking confidence and made the most of their chances.
Luke Stawski opened the scoring for the Eagles with a goal set up by Mark Wilson in the 20th minute.
Magic debutant Chris Berlin, who signed recently from Hamilton, found an equaliser just before half-time. But a minute later Edgeworth regained the lead when young gun Ben Koina scored.
Joel Wood lobbed Magic goalkeeper Scott Carter in the 50th minute then scored again off a corner in the 71st minute.
Broadmeadow coaches Robert Virgili and Damien Smith said they were at a loss to explain their side’s losing streak.
‘‘A lapse in concentration at crucial times is killing us,’’ Smith said. ‘‘We were in the game for the first 20 minutes and then gave away really cheap goals.’’
Virgili said the club was trying to stay positive.
‘‘We’re all in unfamiliar territory,’’ he said. ‘‘There is 100 per cent support from the club in terms of the playing group and the coaching at the moment. We’re keeping it tight and just need to get one win under us. It’s the only thing that will get us out of this.’’
At Cahill Oval yesterday, Valentine Phoenix surrendered the competition lead with an upset 3-1 loss to South Cardiff.
The game between Hamilton and Toronto was washed out.
