Newcastle Jets defeat Melbourne Heart 3-0

11 Feb, 2012 01:26 PM
The semi-final hopes of the Newcastle Jets took a mighty leap forward when they moved into the Hyundai A-League's top five with a 3-0 victory over Melbourne Heart at Hunter Stadium.

The third win in succession was easily the Jets' most comfortable of the season as they leapfrogged an understrength Heart on the ladder.

Striker Jeremy Brockie opened the scoring in the 23rd minute to take his total to nine, the equal second-best tally in the A-League, when he headed home a cross from Tarek Elrich.

In the second half Ryan Griffiths scored his eighth goal of the campaign with a header from a Byun Sung-hwan free kick and then substitute Michael Bridges killed off the match in the 76th minute with a poacher's grab from a Heart deflection.

While the Jets' short-passing game lacked crispness, their defence starved the Heart of goal-scoring opportunities.

A storm an hour before kick-off restricted the crowd to 10,619.

Good win, and a clean sheet, just what the doctor ordered.

Pepper was superb and not on his own by any stretch. Congrats to team and staff. Looking more like a team playing to its strengths.

Good to see all the knockers eating well with all this humble pie flying around!! Well done boys!! Most controlled game I have seen them play in a long time, be it against a weakened opposition, but they did everything well tonight!

What a great win to the mighty Newcastle Jets against our southern state enemies Melbourne. This will finally top it off as saying Newcastle and Sydney will make clear it's status as the premier sporting state in Australia. Big boost for Novacastrians.

Not long ago y'all wanted to get rid of GVE, now he's the best thing since sliced bread. Crikey you lot change your minds fast.

Will you go back to knocking him next week if the Jets lose?
