VALENTINE coach Darrel McAllister said yesterday he was confident of success against minor premiers Weston when the first leg of their Northern NSW State League semi-final home-and-away series kicks off at Cahill Oval on Sunday.
Phoenix have been the only side to rattle Weston of late with victories in all but one encounter with Weston, including the Solo Cup grand final.
Valentine charged into the top four with a late five-game winning streak.
"The boys in the final run home really responded in every game," McAllister said.
"I'm very confident of the finals, we've had success against Weston recently."
Weston had not conceded more than two goals in a game this season before their surprise 4-2 loss to Valentine in round 20.
Another upset victory against Weston would be just the result club on which captain Matthew Parker hoped to end his state league career.
Parker announced his retirement at the end of the year after playing with the Phoenix arm of the club since their rise from First Division.
He has had stints with Edgeworth and Adamstown.
McAllister said the club was sorry to see Parker go.
"He has taken on more of a leadership role as club captain over the last few years, working with some of the other teams," he said.
"Parko takes the reins when Bowlo [first grade captain Chris Bowling] isn't there."
Rumours of Phoenix players flying the coop next year did not bother McAllister.
"Our main aim is to keep everyone we've got and add where our weaknesses are," he said.
"The guys coming forward are staying with us and it's about keeping the rest."
Keegan Wolfenden and Shane Paul are two targets said to be in rival club Magic's sights.
"Keegan is the league's best defender and Shane is the hardest worker in the competition, everyone wants players like that," McAllister said. "This is always a crazy part of year."
