Virgili looks for magical rebound

08 May, 2010 04:00 AM
BROADMEADOW Magic co-coach Robert Virgili has demanded a more focused performance from his side against West Wallsend today after an "intolerable" effort in last week's 2-2 draw with South Cardiff.

Magic meet a Bluebells squad boosted by former national league player Peter McPherson, who will make his debut in midfield at Johnston Park.

McPherson comes to the club from NSW Premier League heavyweights Sydney Olympic.

"We can't go into the Westy game with the same focus as last week and hope to come away with any points," Virgili said. "They have a few quality players out there now."

He said last week's team performance was a wake-up call similar to the club's 6-0 loss to Edgeworth in round one.

Virgili said his players needed to find consistency and believe in themselves again after stumbling against the Gunners.

"The result wasn't season-ending, but the performance could have been. It will not be tolerated," he said.

"They know they were good enough. Everything's there, the plays are there, the experience is there; they just need to improve their self-preparation."

Magic will be without former Newcastle Jets youth player Jon Griffiths, who is expected to return from an ankle injury next week.

Bluebells coach Chris Miner described today's match as his side's biggest test yet.

Miner hoped McPherson would prove a formidable force in tandem with 2009 state league leading goalscorer John Majurovski, who found the net four times in last week's 5-1 rout of Toronto Awaba.

"Maj has finally hit some of his form," Miner said.

"We're very ready for the game against what I consider to be the best squad in terms of players in the league. Magic has the most depth in the competition."

West Wallsend are third on the ladder and Broadmeadow are fifth, one point behind.

The Bluebells will be without midfielder Jacob Pepper, who is away with the NSW Combined High Schools side.

Tomorrow, Edgeworth host Toronto at Jack McLaughlan Oval, Valentine Phoenix meet Weston at Cahill Oval and South Cardiff play Hamilton at Ulinga Oval. All games start at 2.30pm.

I would expect big things from Murray Fletcher this week.

Magic lost again to Valentine last night. One wonders whether the current co-coaching arrangement is actually working. As Magic have been constantly in the finals over the past 10 years, their current form must be a big worry for their hard working committee and supporters. If they were to come last this season, will the Federation have the courage to relegate them if either Azzurri, Lake Macquarie, Lambton or Maitlandwin the 2HD league? I bet the powers that be would be sweating their pants.
