WEST Wallsend coach Chris Miner is tipping this weekend’s two top-four blockbusters to be the ‘‘turning point’’ in the race for the Northern NSW State League premiership.
Third-placed West Wallsend host local rivals and the No.2-ranked Edgeworth at Johnston Park today, while competition leaders Weston are home at Bear Park against fourth-placed Hamilton Olympic tomorrow.
Only four points separate the Bears (33) and Olympic (29), while the Eagles and Bluebells are both on 31.
One goal or one save has the potential to win or lose a premiership.
‘‘With only a month until the finals this could be a real turning point as far as top spot goes,’’ Miner said.
The Bluebells have not qualified for the top-flight semi-finals since 1996 and Miner said breaking that drought has been his major focus.
‘‘People might think we haven’t been there for some years and the players haven’t been there and we’re the most vulnerable, but I just want to consolidate a top-four spot and if we’ve done that we’ve done really well,’’ he said.
West Wallsend have been struck by several omissions this week leading into the Old Boys day clash with Edgeworth.
Left back Michael Sessions received a two-match ban on Thursday for retaliating to a challenge from Gunners striker Dean Kelley last Sunday, utility Jacob Pepper is in Melbourne on Australian Schoolboys duty and Jack O’Toole is in doubt for medical reasons.
Reshuffling their line-up has been nothing new for the Bluebells this season.
Marquee striker John Majurovski broke his ankle in May, but Tye Jones, John Stojanovski and Tommy Walker have stepped up in the front three.
‘‘We had to have three or four up front going froward instead of playing to our strengths,’’ Miner said.
‘‘When Maj was playing he was the focus of our attack.
‘‘I’m happy to say everyone else has taken up the slack or workload.’’
Edgeworth will field an unchanged line-up from the side that beat Hamilton 1-0 last week.
Co-coaches Gary Wilson and Robert Jovanovski told their squad on Tuesday night they would be stepping down at season’s end, only a week after Miner announced he would also leave the Bluebells after a two-year reign.
Wilson said the news would not faze his squad.
‘‘We basically said that we’re not worried about next year and that’s what they want at the moment. They’ve put themselves in a position to win the competition and so they’re concentrating on that at the moment,’’ Wilson said.
In other matches tomorrow, Phoenix will cling on to their remote semi-final chances when they host Broadmeadow at Cahill Oval and South Cardiff face Toronto-Awaba at Ulinga Oval.
