Jones aims up to lofty target of tour position

16 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
KURRI Kurri trainee Matthew Jones is setting the bar high.

The 23-year-old is in the final year of his traineeship and wants to graduate as one of the top three in Australia to get a Von Nida Tour card for next year.

He is off to a flying start with a win and two third placings from the first four events on the NSW/ACT trainee calendar.

A two-time winner on the trainee circuit last year, Jones wants to finish in style and set himself up for a prosperous future as a touring professional.

"I'm looking to play a lot of Von Nida Tour events and a lot of pro-ams and really start to build my career that way," Jones said.

"I want to build myself up step by step, because I've seen a lot of guys throw themselves straight into the deep end and if they don't get a good result straight away they are fighting a losing battle.

"My big goal for the year is to finish in the top three in the trainee averages, because if I finish top three nationally I get a tour card for next year."

Also on the Jones hit list is to win a four-day tournament, and his next chance is at the NSW/ACT Trainee Championships at Hawks Nest in August.

The first 72-hole event this year was the Rich River Classic two weeks ago where Jones finished in a tie for 32nd.

"I'd really want to get a four-day tournament victory and everyone is aspiring to do that," Jones said.

"I've got a lot of pro-ams coming up and some of them are two-day pro-ams, so I'd really like to win one of those."

Jones used his local knowledge at last week's event at The Vintage when he carded a four-under-par 67 to win by two shots.

"The Vintage is pretty much my home trainee event for the year," Jones laughed.

"I'm only 20 minutes away in Rutherford so I've had plenty of experience there before."

Jones was taught by Richard Mercer, who is the head professional at The Vintage, until two years ago when he joined forces with Paul Robertson from Belmont.

Off the golf course Jones has a busy time coming up with plans to marry his fiance Jenna-Leigh Burke next year.

In the meantime he will divide his working hours between Kurri Kurri Golf Club and Tanilba Bay because his boss, head professional Lee Newman, runs both pro-shops.
