THE third round of a golf tournament is traditionally moving day but for Kurri Kurri's Matthew Jones it will be just like any other Wednesday.
Jones holds a two-shot lead heading into the third round of the NSW Trainee Championship at Hawks Nest today.
For the past two months the big-hitting right-hander has travelled to Hawks Nest each Wednesday to practise in readiness for his third and final attempt at the trainee title.
"I don't think there is any pressure on me," the 24-year-old said.
"It's moving day but I'll treat it as any other Wednesday.
"I will stick to my game plan, which has worked well so far, and if it is windy again I think even par will be a good score."
Jones was one of three players to break par yesterday, firing a one-under 71 to add to his opening 69. He has a two-shot cushion to Ben Gear (70-72).
Defending champion Andrew McCormack (Waratah) struggled yesterday with a 78 to be in a tie for 14th at six over.
Jones turned in one over and dropped a shot at the tough 430-metre par-four 11th. But a monster drive and eagle at the 13th was the catalyst for a strong finish.
"I had nothing happening for 12 holes and then made eagle which sparked me up," Jones said.
Wind gusts of up to 50km/h made life tough.
"The greens are getting quicker and with the breeze as strong as it was it was deviating your putts," Jones said. "Thankfully the driver has been terrific. If you can get off the tee well around here you are miles ahead."
Pacific Dunes representative Lee Barton (75, 83), Merewether's Josh de Groot (77,82) and Brendan Smith (77,84), from Belmont, missed the cut.
