Pain-free Cherie into swing of married life

03 Aug, 2010 05:00 AM
LIFE is good for Nelson Bay favourite Cherie Byrnes.

Her problematic shoulder is free of pain, the coaching career at Hamilton Island Golf Club continues to flourish and on Sunday she married her Kiwi boyfriend of two years, Mark Alison, at St Michael's church, in Nelson Bay, in front of 65 family and friends.

Now known as Cherie Alison, she will jet off today with Mark for a honeymoon in Bali.

Alison became Hamilton Island five-star course's inaugural professional when it opened last August.

The course is owned by the Oatley family, who race Wild Oats XI in the annual Sydney to Hobart yacht race, and was designed by Australian golfing great Peter Thompson.

The former Ladies European Tour professional said she loved her job on Hamilton Island.

"My role up here is coaching and also we have a lot of VIPs who come to the island and tons of media who want to see the place," Alison said.

"I also do corporate events, which I worked out the other day is 38 corporate days in a year.

"Not many courses would do that many and that's with it not being that well-known as yet."

Alison spent eight consecutive years on the Ladies European Tour but persistent shoulder injuries curtailed her career.

A trapped nerve in her neck ruled her out of the Australian Open and Masters last summer.

She found a cure while on holiday in New Zealand when a masseur finally released the trapped nerve.

"I had an MRI and everything done and no one knew what was going on and then a lady starting digging into my neck, which was an area that was always sore and she started feeling around and my arm starting flying around," Alison said.

"I could hardly move my arm from the side of my body basically and all of the sudden my arm was flying around 360 degrees."

Even though she has ruled out returning to life as a touring professional, Alison said she might return to the Hunter later this year to contest the Branxton Pro-Am.

"I'm pretty happy just working," she said.

"I spent like 10 years on tour and all the years prior as an amateur travelling and I'm happy being in the one spot.

"I'll probably play a few pro-ams at the end of this year but I don't think I'll ever go overseas."
