Pitty schools Central Coast rival in Kooindah Cup play-off victory

03 Aug, 2010 05:00 AM
YEAR 12 student Alex Pitty handled the pressure best at the Kooindah Cup to beat Warnervale's Dimitrios Papadatos after he birdied the one-hole play-off.

The 18-year-old from Kariong finished equal with Papadatos on 72 in the Vardon event on July 25.

Papadatos could only manage a par in the one-hole play-off.

The Kooindah Cup was Pitty's first major club competition victory and he is keen to pursue a professional golfing career once he has finished his Higher School Certificate.

NSW Colts squad member Kyle Grant won the nearest to the pin and Allan Haughie was the longest driver.

¦ A two-over 74 in the final round of the Rockhampton Pro-Am on Sunday relegated Newcastle's Leigh McKechnie to 23rd on the leaderboard.

McKechnie finished 12 shots behind joint winners Burleigh Heads' Matthew Ballard and Henry Epstein, with three under 285.

Scores of 72, 71 and 68 in the first three rounds had the reigning NSW Open champion well-placed for a top-10 finish.

McKechnie is a confirmed starter for the Morisset Golf Club sponsors' day on Friday.

He will also compete in the $20,000 Morisset Pro-Am on Saturday.

Tee times are still available for the morning and afternoon shotgun starting times in the sponsors' day and golfers can book a place by phoning Morisset Golf Club pro David Stretton on 4973 2455.

The Morisset Ladies Classic is scheduled for August 15.

Entry is $16 and inquiries can be made by phoning 4977 2123.

¦ Former Shortland Waters club captain Rod Carruthers was returned to the role at the July 23 annual general meeting after Shane Arthur was voted off the board of directors.

Ron Freeman was installed as the president in place of Ken Hawkins, who stood down after five years at the helm.

John Penkala and Simon Flack were also voted on to the board for the first time.

¦ Entries are being taken for the annual Kurri Klassik on August 14.

There will be prizes for first, second and third and for men's and ladies' scratch winners. Entry is $20 and includes a nine-hole pro competition, long drive and nearest the pin.
