RISING star Jamie Hook scored a crushing win over Todd Middleby to guide Newcastle to a half-point win over Merewether in the opening round of the Newcastle district senior pennant series on Sunday.
The 17-year-old from South West Rocks played in the No.1 position and beat Middleby 5 and 3 to kick-start Newcastle's tilt at the title, which has been dominated by Waratah in recent seasons.
The Tahs had the first round off as hosts but they will be gunning for a hat-trick of A-grade crowns this year.
Waratah have an experienced side led by Greg McMillan and start their campaign against Nelson Bay at Charlestown on Sunday.
Newcastle's Brian Carmichael won the No.2 match against Craig Jones 2 and 1. Nick Ebrill and Seaton Jones were the other winners.
Merewether were elevated to division one after winning division two last year and victories to Matt Lister, Andy Piggott and Rick Muldoon got them within striking distance. Zac McIntosh cleaned up Chris Cacciato in the reserves match but they are only worth half a point, giving Newcastle a 4 to 3.5 win.
Darren Griffin won the No.1 match for Charlestown in their 4.5 to 3 victory over Toronto and Nelson Bay's John Herrick won the top match over Darren Searl in their 4.5 to 3 win over Karuah.
In division two at Hawks Nest, Shortland Waters defeated Tanilba Bay 5 to 2.5, Beresfield beat Sugar Valley 5.5 to 2 and Belmont won every match in their 7.5 to 0 victory over Muree.
