IT has taken Newcastle mare Songbird Lane a long time to get in tune with racing but she could prove to be a smash hit.
Today the five-year-old mare will be chasing her second straight win at Newcastle from just three career starts.
She will attempt to go on her winning way in the class one handicap over 1200 metres at Broadmeadow.
She was posted the $4.20 favourite in early markets for the race after her Broadmeadow victory this month.
The story of Songbird Lane is a tribute to the perseverance of Newcastle trainer Peter Eggleston.
Songbird Lane had her first trial on March 10 last year and looked very promising in finishing third.
But as had happened before to Songbird Lane, which is a well-named daughter of Street Cry, the trial became a distant memory before she finally made it to race day.
"I have never had a mare who has had so many problems, nothing huge, just niggling things which kept her from racing," Eggleston said.
He was rewarded for his persistence when Songbird Lane finished third on debut at Gosford on July 22 this year over 1000m, when beaten just more than a length.
"We had something on her at big odds that day and she raced well but just not good enough to get the money, and really it was her lack of race experience that beat her," Eggleston said.
Songbird Lane got through that race without too many worries and got to Newcastle on August 7 as a five-year-old having her second race start.
She showed her ability with a strong win in a maiden over 900m.
It was a case of relief as much as joy for Eggleston to watch his mare finally greet the judge.
"I was just so happy for her owners and the mare herself. She has gone through so much but now she was a winner," Eggleston said.
Now the man who took Valance to group 1 honours in the QTC Derby hopes Songbird Lane is on the verge of a good if not belated career.
"She should race well again," Eggleston said.
Gosford jockey Chris O'Brien, who won on Songbird Lane, is booked to again ride her. She goes up just half a kilogram on her winning weight.
Top-class country apprentice Tim Bell will make his first appearance at Newcastle this season today.
Bell, who is based at Tamworth, had 22 rides at Newcastle last season for one win but was much more successful in Brisbane and Sydney.
He rode in Brisbane last Saturday but has been booked by such top trainers as Chris Waller for today's meeting.
He will ride first-starter Wiggly Girl for Waller in the 1500m maiden plate.
Included in Bell's mounts are the $6 chance Sunset Coast for Kris Lees in the 1200m class one.
He will also ride Lees's Big Bad Joel, which was $4.20 to win race five. His other mounts are Silent Symphony, Moodlighting and River Press.
