Everything coming up roses for Testarhythm

14 Aug, 2010 05:00 AM
A COUPLE of years ago Newcastle trainer Darren Smith was given strict instructions to head to Sydney and buy the best colt at the Inglis Classic sales.

Smith had no intention of disobeying the orders as they came from his father-in-law Bill Ford.

And today Smith's $110,000 spending spree could pay handsome dividends.

Smith's eye for a horse led him to buying the yearling which now races as Testarhythm, and today the youngster can show the trainer's judgment was spot on by winning the $125,000 Run To The Rose over 1300 metres at Rosehill.

If Testarhythm keeps up his winning run at Rosehill he will earn a shot at the $1 milllion Golden Rose over 1400m at the same track later this month.

It may also put Testarhythm on the path to the $1 million Caulfield Guineas over 1600m in Melbourne next month.

"I had a look at every yearling in the sale and this one just stood out to me, he was a lovely type, plenty of scope and just oozed class," Smith recalled.

"I was keen to get him and Bill never flinched when I said I was sure he would go for over a hundred grand.

"I had the same feeling about this colt as I did when I bought Court Command and he turned out to be a horse good enough to run a placing in the Caulfield Guineas."

Smith's feeling about Testarhythm translated into racetrack form last start when the colt bolted in at Canterbury.

Testarhythm is a $9 chance on TAB Sportsbet after scoring in midweek company last start.

That was on Wednesday, July 28, at Canterbury when the youngster sat third at the turn and simply toyed with his rivals in the straight.

Showing the acceleration of a good horse, he burst away to win by 1? lengths in the 1200m race.

That was on heavy going so Smith has no problems with any type of surface that his charge faces today.

"He was very impressive last start and I can definitely say he has improved since his latest effort," Smith said.

"He is improving with everything that he is asked to do, and his work on Tuesday morning showed he is ready to race again.

"I know this is a lot harder but when one like this comes along I have learned you just have to have a crack with them.

"This race will tell us just where we are headed with Testarhythm.

"If he goes as well as I know he can then I will look at the Golden Rose with him, and he has been entered for the Caulfield Guineas in Melbourne."

Testarhythm has drawn gate eight in a field of 13 today but that does not faze Smith.

"Testarhythm has natural pace and we do have Jim Cassidy to steer him," Smith said.

"Jim has returned to riding from injury in fantastic form and I expect him to give our colt his chance."
