Lees happy to throw Elimbari in at the deep end

21 Aug, 2010 05:00 AM
NEWCASTLE trainer Kris Lees has no doubt he could not have picked a harder but better race than today's Silver Shadow Stakes to kick off the campaign of Elimbari.

The Fastnet Rock filly resumes against a star-studded field in the group 3 $125,000 Silver Shadow Stakes over 1200 metres at Warwick Farm.

Elimbari will face top-class fillies like Solar Charged, Obsequious, Chance Bye, Parables and More Strawberries.

"It is a hot race," Lees said yesterday.

"I do not suppose we could have hand-picked a harder race for Elimbari to kick off her three-year-old season.

"At least we will know where we are going with Elimbari after she runs tomorrow.

"If she goes well in this race than there is no doubt she will measure up to the best fillies racing in Sydney in the spring.

"If she is found wanting then there are plenty of lesser races she can contest."

But Lees is not giving up easily with the daughter of his family's former star mare, Shalt Not.

"I am certainly not saying she won't be competitive," Lees said.

"She has shown she is good and she probably ran her best race at her first start when she won like a real top-class performer.

"She is first-up tomorrow but she did improve with her spell and her work and trial suggest she can go well."

Lees will be relying on his ladies for a big day at Warwick Farm.

He will also start Hidden Wonder, which was a strong last-start winner.

Hidden Wonder, which will run in the $70,000 benchmark 90 handicap (1600m), won with an outstanding effort at Randwick over 1600m on August 7.

On that day she was on the pace all the way and fought off her rivals to win by a long head on slow going.

Today Hidden Wonder goes up to 55 kilograms from the 53.5kg she carried last start.

Her allotted weight of 56.5kg is offset by 1.5kg for in-form apprentice Tommy Berry.

Hidden Wonder has drawn gate two and should go straight to the front from that good barrier.

"She is drawn well and should be on the pace again," Lees said.

"She really has pleased me and has definitely trained on, so I am expecting another big run from Hidden Wonder."
