Madame Pedrille heading to Adelaide

15 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
TRAINER Darren Smith is likely to send star mare Madame Pedrille for a two-race assault in Adelaide after her unlucky third at Randwick on Saturday.

Madame Pedrille was resuming from a long spell when forced to race three wide without cover throughout the $150,000 Breeders Classic over 1200 metres.

She hit the lead in the straight but could not maintain momentum after such a punishing run and weakened to finish third behind Alverta.

The defeat in the group 2 event has not dented Smith's confidence in his five-year-old.

"The way the race was run and won she did an amazing job to get as close as what she did," Smith said.

"Really she ran out of her skin. After having such a hard run, she refused to give in and I was very proud of her.

"She had a real good blow for five minutes after the race and it was obvious she needed the run."

Smith said he would give the mare a couple of days to get over the run before deciding on her campaign but admitted he was leaning to sending Madame Pedrille to Adelaide.

He has worked out a comprehensive plan for the trip.

If things work out this week with the mare Smith will transport her by float to Melbourne on Sunday night.

She would have 10 days in Melbourne before going to Adelaide.

Smith has selected a group 3 event over 1100m on March 6 as her first Adelaide run.

The race would be her lead-up to the group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes, which carries the sponsor name of the Sportingbet Classic, over 1200m on March 20.

Smith said Madame Pedrille, which has won five of 10 starts, deserved her chance for group 1 glory.

"Despite getting beaten first up, I still am sure this mare is up to a group 1 race like the Sangster, which is restricted to fillies and mares," he said.

Newcastle trainer Kris Lees has decided to bring Pins On Parade back to handicap grade after his unplaced effort at Randwick on Saturday.

Pins On Parade sat outside leader Dreamscape in the group 3 Southern Cross Stakes over 1200m. He hit the lead in the straight but was overhauled and finished unplaced behind Kenny's World.

"Pins On Parade will have two or three weeks before he runs again," Lees said.

"He just was not up to the standard on Saturday and he can come back a peg or two next time round."

It was a similar case for Newcastle's other runner on Saturday, Looking Fur Lang, which was at Eagle Farm.

Looking Fur Lang led but weakened in the straight to finish fifth.

Trainer Alan Scorse said he thought not having run for a month told on the horse.

He is still looking to back up his speedster at Doomben over 1350m on Saturday.
