Partelle has gleam in eye for Newmarket

22 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
WYONG trainer Brett Partelle plundered Saturday's Newcastle meeting and is now chasing Broadmeadow's autumn jewel, the $140,000 Newmarket.

Partelle had a winning double at Broadmeadow when Tasos took out the 900-metre maiden and Laguna Grande was successful in the 1200m maiden.

Partelle believes those sweet victories are just an entree for him at Newcastle with his main course being to win the group 3 Newmarket over 1400m on Wednesday, March 17.

Partelle is aiming star performer Walking Or Dancing at a first-up tilt at the Newmarket.

Walking Or Dancing has not raced since storming home for a runaway win in the $400,000 Magic Millions Trophy at the Gold Coast in early January.

Partelle said Walking Or Dancing would trial at Gosford on Friday morning then head towards the Newmarket.

"The Newmarket is the perfect first-up race for Walking Or Dancing," he said.

"The horse has had an easy time since his great Magic Millions win and I am sure he can have an even bigger campaign this time."

Partelle is not mucking round with his aims for Walking Or Dancing.

After the Newcastle run, he is looking at Sydney autumn features such as the group 1 George Ryder Stakes and the group 1 Doncaster.

If things work out, Partelle hopes to take his horse north for the Brisbane winter carnival, where he will focus on the group 1 Doomben 10,000 and the group 1 Stradbroke.

"I have no doubt that Walking Or Dancing is up to group 1 level," Partelle said.

"He showed that with a couple of very unlucky runs in Melbourne over the spring last year.

"He looks in tremendous order and is ready to trial and then get on with the job."

Partelle has feature race ambitions in Brisbane for classy mare Inherited.

"She will be aimed at races like the Winter Stakes, which is a group 1 event for fillies and mares in Brisbane over the carnival," he said. "I am sure she deserves a chance in a race like that."

Partelle said that both his Saturday winners at Broadmeadow might be headed for Brisbane.

"Both are smart and will get the chance to show they are worthy of going north in the winter for minor events," he said.

Partelle said he believed he had the ammunition to fire in the rich Brisbane carnival.

"Hopefully we will have a very strong team going north for the winter," he said.

"Tasos is good enough to take to Sydney and that is where he will be headed, if I can find a suitable race in coming weeks for him. If he does show he is up to Sydney standard then I can start to aim him at Brisbane in the winter and look to some of the minor events up there over the carnival."

Partelle said Laguna Grande was living up to his early promise.

"He looked like being a star two-year-old but just did not have the maturity needed to succeed early on," he said.

"Laguna Grande is showing he is ready to produce his true ability now."

Jockey Jon Grisedale won on both of the Partelle horses.
