NEWCASTLE’S Social Rank is in great winning form, but the true best of the exciting grey may never be seen.
Master trainer Paul Perry fears that a throat complaint may prevent Social Rank from producing his undoubted potential.
Social Rank again showed blistering speed to see off his rivals at Warwick Farm on Saturday.
The grey flash recorded the quick time of 56.53seconds for the 1000metres of the benchmark 80.
That was just outside the track record of 56.25 which has stood for 12 years.
The win backed up success at Wyong on December 21 in the Australian Handicap over 1100m.
For Perry, these wins are just part of a case of what might have been with Social Rank.
‘‘As a young horse I thought he could turn out to be an extraordinary sprinter,’’ Perry said. ‘‘He was just a natural runner.’’
But Social Rank’s career stalled because of a throat complaint.
‘‘He came back from the spelling paddocks and one morning I picked up he was making a noise in the throat which was not natural,’’ Perry said.
‘‘It was diagnosed that he needed an operation, and that kept him away from racing.
‘‘The operation was deemed a success, but I don’t think they ever go on to produce their absolute best after a throat complaint like that.
‘‘That is a pity, but the way he is going now he could have been anything in sprinting ranks.
‘‘But we are still going to have plenty of fun with him.’’
Perry picked out the four-year-old gelding by Stratum at the 2009 Magic Millions sales at the Gold Coast.
He paid $90,000 for Lot 845. Social Rank has won six of his 17 starts and almost $130,000 in prizemoney.
Perry said his hardest task with Social Rank now was finding the right races that the flyer could display his pace in.
‘‘There are not too many shortcourse races around for him,’’ Perry said.
‘‘He will need a couple of easy weeks after that hard run.
‘‘There is a 1000-metre race for him in a month and that should be his next run.’’
Perry left for the Gold Coast yesterday for the Magic Millions sales this week.
‘‘It would be nice to pick up another one with the pace of this bloke,’’ Perry said.
‘‘But they don’t come along too often.’’
He shelved plans to take his star two-year-old, Hidden Warrior, for the $2million Magic Millions on Saturday.
‘‘I will freshen him up and try and win something easier around Sydney with him,’’ Perry said.
