Space Invader puts locals on alert in Australian debut

PATRONS at the Newcastle International Paceway tonight should be on the lookout for an alien invasion, with former Kiwi pacer Space Invader sent to launch his Australian campaign.

The gelding, which is now prepared at Ettalong by Michael Formosa, is the winner of his only start in New Zealand over 2600 metres at Addington on September 11.

Formosa said Space Invader had been in his stables for about six or seven weeks and that he was coming along nicely for his Australian debut in race five (2030m).

"He only did what he had to when he won on debut in New Zealand," Formosa said.

"He is still pretty green but he goes all right.

"His next few runs should be a good guide to what ability he does have."

Formosa also has bright prospects of three other winners on the 10-race card with Napa Franco, Our Sir Angus and Easton Cullen.

Napa Franco was a victim of circumstances when eighth in her heat of the Hawkesbury to Hunter Standing Start Championship (2550m) last Saturday night.

She will get another chance to qualify for the $8000 final next week when she comes off 10m in race three tonight.

"I don't think that the standing starts really suit her," Formosa said.

"Even so she did a good job from the stand last week because she struck trouble early, then was forced four wide when making a run in the middle stages.

"Then when she was able to get to the chair she still got no peace but was still only beaten 71/2 metres."

Our Sir Angus, which will run in race eight (2030m), has a win and three seconds from four starts since resuming from a spell.

He won at Newcastle three starts back before just being nutted by a nose by Cantiscape at Newcastle on November 8 and then beaten eight metres by Mighty Pocketlands last Saturday night after covering ground three wide to race outside the leader.

Easton Cullen, which will contest race nine (1609m), has not raced since May. He won at Newcastle three starts back on April 12 and has won two trials by big margins at Newcastle earlier this month.

He will clash with Republic Australia, which won narrowly when resuming from a spell at Newcastle on October 30 before finishing third at Harold Park last time out on November 7.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
