Star Of Octagonal now racing for Newcastle

31 Aug, 2010 05:00 AM
BOOM Hunter Valley galloper Star of Octagonal will now race under the Newcastle banner when he returns to racing at Randwick on Saturday.

Trainer Todd Howlett, who prepares the four-year-old gelding on his Lower Belford property, has agreed to have his rising champion nominated as a Newcastle horse.

Howlett has been loading up a truck full of horses and travelling down most mornings from his property to work Star Of Octagonal and at least a dozen other gallopers on the Broadmeadow track.

The rising star of the training ranks revealed on Saturday that he will change the status Star Of Octagonal and his other horses from Cessnock-based to Broadmeadow.

Star Of Octagonal had his final hit-out before resuming in a Benchmark 90 Handicap over 1100 metres at Randwick on Saturday with an exhibition gallop at Broadmeadow.

He was ridden by Andrew Gibbons and worked on the outside of the Darren Smith-trained Testarhythm (Darryl McLellan) over 800m.

Testarhythm will also run at Randwick on Saturday when he starts in the Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) with Tim Clark in the saddle.

The three-year-old colt matched it all the way with the bold-striding Star Of Octagonal as the pair were clicked down the running, and both were impressive.

Star Of Octagonal got the judge's nod by a head with the pair electronically clocked at running the 800m in 45.08 seconds, coming home the final 600m in a very fast 32.79 seconds.

Clockers who spend their mornings hand timing horses at Broadmeadow gave them a time of 50.05 seconds and the 600m in 34.70.

Importantly they were amazed at the final furlong of the pair which was registered on the clocks in just 10.25 seconds.

Everyone walked away impressed.

"Super" was the one-word answer from Gibbons after he got off Star Of Octagonal and was asked how the horse went.

"I have been riding him in his work down here at Broadmeadow for some time and believe me that was as good as you could hope from for a horse which is about to resume," Gibbons enthused.

"I have ridden horses like Choisir and Fastnet Rock in their barrier trials and this bloke goes as good as them that is for sure."

Howlett has called on Newcastle apprentice Blake Spriggs to ride the horse on Saturday.

"He will get 59 kilograms in the ratings race and Blake will take two kilos off his back which is a great help," Howlett said.

"I am am so excited with the way he just worked, he looks great."

Star Of Octagonal won the South Pacific Classic at Randwick over 1400m and then the $770,000 Inglis Guineas at Scone over 1600m before being spelled.

"After Saturday he will go to the Cameron [September 15] here at Newcastle and then hopefully the Epsom," Howlett said.

Testarhythm is also being aimed at the Newcastle carnival and will run in the $175,000 Spring Stakes over 1600m on the same day as the Cameron.

"I could not be happier with the way my horse is progressing and that was shown by the way he went against Star Of Octagonal which looks some sort of horse," Smith said. "My horse will be very competitive on Saturday, and that should top him off perfectly for the 1600m of the Spring Stakes."

I didnt comment on the horse buddy, i know the horse is good! He has one decent galloper. If that and being successful in the mediocre cessnock/broadmeadow racing scene warrants the tag 'rising star' then yeh, i guess he is!
