NEWCASTLE trainer Darren Smith will aim Testarhythm at the $175,000 group 3 Spring Stakes at Broadmeadow after the promising colt's strong effort at Rosehill on Saturday.
Smith believes the 1600-metre feature event for three-year-olds at Broadmeadow next month could be the "ideal race" for Testarhythm.
The lightly raced son of Testa Rossa showed his class when third in the Run To The Rose (1300m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
Testarhythm sat right on the pace in the group 3 event and battled on strongly to wind up third behind Squamosa and Masquerader.
The Newcastle galloper was 2? lengths behind the two star performers.
"Really I could not be happier with the way the horse went," Smith said.
"He really battled on well and he showed he will be up to the better three-year-olds when he gets more experience.
"I don't think he will go back for the Golden Rose but a race like the Spring Stakes at Newcastle would be ideal for him."
Testarhythm is out of the good race mare Dancing Bridges, which was at her best over the middle distances.
"I am sure that the mile will not be a problem and if he went well there he might even go to Melbourne for the spring." Smith said.
Newcastle's two other starters at Rosehill on Saturday also ran well.
The Kris Lees-trained Motspur and Lacada Siren both finished among the places.
Motspur finished third in the Starlight Stakes over 1100m. He was second for most of the trip and battled well behind the David Payne pair of Winter King and Centennial Park.
Lacada Siren came from last to wind up third in the Fairfield RSL Handicap behind We Betcha.
Lacada Siren was an $18 chance but she will probably not start at those juicy odds next time after the way she hit the line.
Lacada Siren was having just her second start from a spell and will appreciate a longer trip next time.
"Both ran well and showed that they could be competitive in similar races in Sydney over the spring," Lees said.
