TOP Cessnock rider Robert Thompson is convinced country galloper The Jackal can justify his bush champion tag again today in Brisbane.
The Tamworth galloper has made his name with victories in two straight Ramornie Handicaps at Grafton, a Healy Stakes win at Eagle Farm and success in the Satellite Stakes at Rosehill.
Thompson rode The Jackal in each of those wins and he makes the flight from his Coalfields base to Eagle Farm today to reunite with the horse in the Falvelon Handicap over 1200m.
The Jackal carries the crushing weight of 61 kilograms but Thompson is sure that won't stop his old mate from scoring another win.
"I am more worried about the weather than the weight," Thompson said yesterday.
"All The Jackal needs is firm footing and he can carry the big weight and win."
Thompson has not been on The Jackal recently but has kept a close eye on him. "He is going enormous," he said.
Thompson said the other important factor in The Jackal's favour today was that he raced so well on the big Eagle Farm track.
Newcastle galloper Motspur will be one of The Jackal's opponents.
"I thought the field he would meet in Sydney on Saturday would be a bit too hard for [Motspur] and that Brisbane might be a bit easier," trainer Kris Lees said.
"But then you run into a horse like The Jackal and that certainly won't be an easy task to beat him."
Thompson has three other rides at Eagle Farm, including two-year-old Top Brass, which has been racing well.
He will ride Wollombi Road and Buckmoore for close friend Jeremy Sylvester.
Buckmoore did a good job when second on the Kensington track at Randwick and is not badly placed in a class six handicap today.
