08 Sep, 2010 05:00 AM
DEFENDING titleholders Mayfield West bounced back from an opening-round scare to eliminate Boolaroo from the No.1 grade of the Newcastle district three-threes competition last week.

Mayfield West, who scraped home by one shot against Alder Park in the first round, overpowered Boolaroo 76-33 in the second.

Club coach and co-ordinator Mick Brown, the only successful skipper against Alder Park, beat Graeme Simpson 27-10. The other two Mayfield West skippers also scored good wins - Wayne Hughson beating Les Field 24-13 and Greg Jordan downing Ray Wilkinson 25-10.

Mayfield West travel to Kotara this afternoon to meet the home side who maintained their unbeaten record with a big win over Water Board last week.

Kotara won 89-34 with Robert Muir's 41-9 thrashing of Mark Ross paving the way.

In other matches between undefeated teams today, Raymond Terrace host Swansea and Stockton are at home to Warners Bay.

Raymond Terrace thumped Windale Gateshead 74-44, Swansea outclassed Toronto Workers 91-37, Warners Bay downed Kahibah 72-64 and Stockton beat Valentine 56-52.

Raymond Terrace kept their chances of a third successive No.2 title alive when they beat Wallsend No.1 67-54.

The Jets, who were beaten in the first round, host Lambton New Lambton RSL this afternoon.

Karuah RSL No.1 continued the solid start to the defence of their No.3 grade title by defeating Charlestown Tigers 63-55.
