Yeomans has presidents singles title ripped from grasp

ANDREW Yeomans (Bar Beach) went agonisingly close to winning the State Presidents Singles Championship at Avoca Beach on Friday afternoon.

Yeomans scored 14 unanswered shots against Brad Mitchell (Pacific Palms) to lead 27-21 and was holding game at 28-25 before Mitchell took his bowl out for the shot.

Mitchell then scored a two and a three to take the title 31-28.

Yeomans and his clubmate Gregory Johns were eliminated in the opening round of the State Presidents Pairs title on Saturday morning by West Dubbo duo Allan Andriske and Ben Sullivan 24-10.

Ettalong Memorial pair Michael Brabham and Allan Quinn won the title.

¦ Nelson Bay pair Brian Bateman and Terry Antram were becalmed before losing their Newcastle District Champion of Club Pairs Champions semi-final at Burwood Colliery on Saturday afternoon.

They led 9-1 after six ends but then scored only twice more when beaten 22-12 by Lambton pair Craig Thompson and Jay Walls.

The Lambton pair now meet Craig Bush and Brad Unsted (Kotara), who beat Jeff Bush and Ross Ball (Alder Park) 25-21, in the final at Burwood Colliery on Saturday week.

¦ Lesley Szumylo (Alder Park) joined with Edgeworth clubmates Mary Bobeth, Lillian Beeson, Olga Hyde to beat a 60-team field in the Newcastle District Women's Bowling Association grand carnival last week.

¦ Brendon Baker (Raymond Terrace), beaten in a semi-final of the Australian indoor singles championship two weeks ago, will team with Tony MacLean in the Windale Gateshead Prestige Pairs next week.

Wayne Lambourne (Maitland City), a former winner of the event, will have Glen Solomons (Windale Gateshead) as his lead.

¦ Beresfield will stage a charity fours gala to aid the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service on October 17 beginning at 10.30am.

Entry is $10 per player, which includes a barbecue lunch, and must be registered by 9.30.

¦ Alder Park are taking entries for their $3000 restricted singles (pennant grades five to seven) to be played on October 23 and 24.

Cardiff will host their $2610 men's prestige triples competition on October 9 and 10.

Their annual father-and-son knockout pairs will begin on November 1.
