TODAY'S Newcastle netball open championship major semi-final will pit former teammates against each other when minor premiers Nova take on second-placed Nags Head Hotel.
Sydney Swift Lara Welham joined Nags' crusade for the silverware late in the season.
Nova, Newcastle's newest top-grade team, is made up of some of Welham's close friends and former Hunter Jaegers teammates.
They have lost just one game this season and have beaten Nags twice this season.
"I haven't played them yet," Welham said.
"It's going to be interesting because they're all my friends."
Nags' goal average has improved since Welham was added to the playing roster five weeks ago, just in time to qualify for a finals appearance. Players need only complete three games in the regular season to be cleared to play finals.
Welham has helped steer Nags to convincing victories over BNC Albion 1B, Bilbie Dan, the Junction Hotel and Lakeside Village Tavern.
Welham said the rise in the amount of goals was a result of the team focusing on its finals campaign.
"All the girls have stepped up in the last few weeks, that's what it is," Welham said.
"Everyone's got a sense of urgency in their game. They are putting in all these one per-centers they may have let go earlier in the season."
Careful not to let her star status overshadow the talent in her new team, Welham said her role was to support Nags' existing shooting combination of Claudia Russell and Danielle Harvey.
"I haven't started a game since I've played with them," Welham said.
The losers will get a second chance in next weekend's final against Bilbie Dan.
