LAKESIDE Village Tavern caused a major upset in the Newcastle open netball championship on Saturday, knocking off former equal competition leaders BNC (1).
Lakeside won 40-32 to continue their impressive run in the open championship this season after being promoted from A-grade.
BNC (1) were without their top shooter, former NSW Institute of Sport scholarship holder Kelly Pepper, which forced some changes.
BNC 1 still fielded a quality line-up, but it was the defence from Lakeside's goalkeeper, Janamarie Polutea, that provided the backbone to one of the club's finest victories.
Junction Hotel (1) had a convincing 47-28 win over Hotel Premier.
Junction (1)'s mid-court trio of Rachael Hall, Annabel Gazzoli and Kristen Weaver were all clinical in defence.
They forced several turnovers and generated much of their side's attack.
In other matches, Nags Head beat Junction Hotel (2) 42-29 and BNC (2) lifted themselves off the bottom of the ladder when they recorded their first victory of the season. They beat Bilbie Dan, who were also winless going into the game, 47-39.
