New blood leads state netball tilt

06 Jun, 2009 05:00 AM
NEWCASTLE Netball will field a new-look open side today at the state championships in Wollongong in an attempt to improve on their seventh place last year.

Only two players remain from the 2008 squad Nicole McLean and Laisha Tynan.

Team officials are confident a mixture of youth and experience should place Newcastle highly in the event which attracts netballers from 10 associations across NSW.

Newcastle's under-17 and under-21 sides loom as the club's best chances of winning a title.

Australian under-19 representative Natarlia Manning will again feature in the under-21 side and will carry much of the workload along with shooter Ashlee Rohowicz.

Teams from Charlestown, Lakeside, Maitland and Port Stephens will also play at the three-day carnival.
